Barbaric Tribes Invading


  1. Barbaric Tribes which attacked Rome from the Black Sea region were the Gothic tribes of the Ostrogoths in the eastern part and the Visigoths in the western part. The Eastern Germanic tribes which attacked Rome were the Vandals, Gepids, Burgundians, and Lombards. The Western Germanic tribes which attacked Rome were the Franks, Saxons, Thuringians, and Alamanni.
  2. Goths were tall, strong, blue eyed, long hair, and fair. They were lawless, greedy,and treacherous.
  3. Huns were a warrior race of Asia. They were small, dark eyed, hairless, and had scars on their faces. They rode horses, lived on raw flesh, wore skins, were fierce, blood-thirsty, and vile.
  4. Eastern Germanic tribe of Goths first attacked Rome for control of the area at the mouth of the Danube River at the Black Sea.
  5. 247 AD and 251 AD Goths led Romans under command of Emperor Decius to the swamps and the Goths won.
  6. 269 AD Romans under Claudius I defeated the Goths.
  7. 324 AD Rome under Emperor Constantine made a treaty with the Visigoths known as Confederates of the Empire.
  8. Visigoths under King Alanic attacked Rome three times and won. Then he started to march toward Africa.
  9. Number of invading Barbaric tribes: 1,000 Ostrogoths to Italy, 1,000 Visigoths to Spain, 25,000 Burgundians to southeast France, and 8,000 Vandals which crossed the the Strait of Gilbraltar.
  10. Sarmatians or Alans were brought to Southwest France by the Roman Emperor to help control the Celtic tribes and protect against Germanic invaders.
  11. Romans under Aetius and the Goths under King Theodoric joined together to defeat the Huns under Attila. The Franks and the Burgundians joined them. On the plain near Chalons, a great battle was fought where the Huns lost called the Battle of Nations.
  12. A year later, Pope Leo I and Attila met in Italy on the banks of the River Mincio where Attila yielded for peace. Attila conquered men, but the Pope Leo I brought something greater.

Current Problem/Solutions


  1. Mexican immigrants are crossing the border between Mexico and the United States illegally. The United States has built a partial wall and uses border patrol to keep watch on the border to prevent them from coming in.
  2. Foreigners from all different countries are using the border south of the United States, Mexico and the border to the north of the United States, Canada to cross over into the United States. Customs and border patrol agents exist on both ends of the United States to keep out foreigners.
  3. Al-Qaeda is a group of Islamic militants founded by Osama bin Laden and Muhammad Atef whom are trying to expel the infidels and unite Muslims in a spiritual community. They want to destroy the western world, the United States. The United States military and the creation of Homeland Security under Bush 43 protects the people of the United States from these terriorists.
  4. Cartels or drug lords are invading the United States with drugs, guns, and crime. The DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms), border patrol, the police, the National Guard, and the United States military try to keep drugs out of the United States.
  5. Communism is affecting our way of life and goes against our freedom. The United States tries to rid the world of Communism political and militarily.
  6. Cyber terriorism trying to infiltrate government data bases, financial data bases, business data bases, and personal data bases. United States Government agencies regularly block cyber attacks on the internet and other computerized methods.
  7. Nuclear countries which are hostile to the United States are threatening our way of life. Through the United Nations, NATO, militarily,and political and social talks the United States tries to defer a nuclear attack.
  8. Groups from within the United States, such as racial and anti-government are trying to destroy our civil liberties. The United States has laws which protect people's rights and a judicial system which punishes those which break them.

Letter to professor

Dear Professor David Mattingly,
My name is Blake Machesky and I am a 7th grade student at Nagel Middle School in Cincinnati, Ohio in the United States. I am currently studying Roman History, specifically barbaric tribes which invaded Rome. As a Professor of Roman Archaeology at the University of Leicester I feel you are most qualified to answer questions I have on the subject. I know your time is valuable, but being the world’s leading expert on the southern Roman Empire, I feel I could learn the most knowledge from you. Could you please answer a couple of my questions?
-What influence did the eastern Ostrogoths and western Visigoths have on Rome?
-Was Attila of the Huns, Rome’s greatest threat?
-What archaeological evidence exists of the Battle of Nations?
Thank you once again for your help. I appreciate your time and incite on the Roman Empire.
